What to Ask a PPF Installer Before You Book
October 27, 2026 · By Tim Steuer, Founder · XPEL Certified Installer
Short answer: ask which film they install, who actually puts it on your car, how they prep the paint, whether they cut from patterns, exactly which panels the coverage includes, what the warranty covers, how long they need the car, and what drives the quote. Eight questions, ten minutes on the phone, and you will know more about a shop than any star rating can tell you. Here is each question, why it matters, and how we answer it.
1. Which film do you install, and which line?
A brand name on the sign is a start, not an answer. Ask for the specific product line, because lines within one brand are built for different jobs: a clear gloss film, a satin film, and a film with a hydrophobic top coat are three different decisions. Then ask whether the shop is an authorized dealer for that brand. Authorization connects the install to the manufacturer warranty, which requires professional installation, and to the brand’s current pattern library.
Our answer: Wrap Labs has been an XPEL Authorized Dealer since 2017. We install XPEL Ultimate Plus, XPEL Stealth, and XPEL Ultimate Fusion, and we do not use unverified private-label films. If you are still deciding on the brand itself, here is why we install XPEL.
2. Who will actually install it?
The same roll of film can look flawless on one car and show lifted edges and trapped dust on another. The difference is the person holding the squeegee. Ask who will work on your car, how long they have been installing film, and whether the shop has trained installers on staff. Then ask to see finished cars, up close. Anyone who does this well is happy to show you the edges around a hood, a mirror, and a bumper.
Our answer: Tim Steuer, our founder, and Miguel Hernandez, our lead technician, both hold XPEL installer certification (their credentials are on our about page). No trainees touch your vehicle. We went deeper on vetting a shop in what to look for in an XPEL installer.
3. How will you prep the paint?
Clear film shows everything underneath it, for as long as it is on the car: embedded grit, swirl marks, an old chip. Ask what happens before the first panel goes down. A thorough answer covers a wash, decontamination, and an honest conversation about whether any existing defects should be addressed first. A good installer also points out chips or touch-ups already on the car before the job starts, so nobody is surprised later.
Our answer: every job starts with a free consultation of 15 to 20 minutes. We inspect your vehicle, recommend the right coverage, and answer every question, with no commitment required.
4. Do you cut from patterns or from bulk film?
There are two ways to cut paint protection film: computer-cut patterns built for your exact year, make, and model, or bulk film trimmed by hand on the car. Patterns give consistent, precise edges and keep a blade off your clear coat. Hand trimming has its place in a few spots, where an experienced installer can get a better wrapped edge, but the body of the job should come from a pattern.
While you are on the subject, ask how edges are finished. On a quality install, film wraps around and tucks behind panels wherever possible. Film cut flat on the face of a panel leaves a visible line and a place for dirt to collect.
Our answer: XPEL’s DAP software holds 80,000+ precision-cut patterns designed from manufacturer vehicle data. Your kit is cut in our shop for your car, not trimmed by hand on your paint.
5. What exactly does the coverage include?
“Full front” does not mean the same thing everywhere. Ask for the panel list in writing. Is the hood covered edge to edge, or only a strip along the front? Are the fenders included? The mirrors? On a full-car job, does “full” mean every painted panel, and are door jambs and trim included or an add-on?
Our answer: our Bumper and Headlights package covers the full front bumper and headlights. Full Front, our most popular package, adds the full hood, full fenders, and side mirrors. Full Car covers every OEM painted surface, with door jambs, trim, and more available as an add-on. If you are weighing the two ends of that range, our clear bra vs. full-body PPF guide walks through it.
6. What does the warranty cover, and who handles a claim?
Ask how long the warranty runs, what it covers, and whether it transfers when you sell the car. Then ask the question most people skip: if something goes wrong, who do I call? A film warranty covers film defects. It does not cover a rock that marks the film, a collision, or damage from a brush car wash. Know that difference before you book, and ask whether the shop stands behind its own workmanship separately from the manufacturer.
Our answer: the XPEL PPF we install carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, bubbling, peeling, and delamination, and it transfers to the next owner. Every installation also includes the Wrap Labs workmanship guarantee. For a claim, you contact us, we verify the product and install, and we route a valid claim to the manufacturer. Our response time is 24 to 48 business hours. The full terms are on our warranty and care page, and how long PPF lasts covers what that decade looks like in practice.
7. How long will you have my car, and what happens after?
Ask for a realistic timeline. Careful installation and initial curing take time, and a full-car job squeezed into a single day is a reason to ask more questions. Then ask for aftercare instructions: when you can wash the car, what to wash it with, and what to avoid.
Our answer: partial front coverage typically takes 1 to 2 days, and a full vehicle 3 to 5 days for proper preparation, installation, and curing. Afterward, hand wash or use a touchless wash with pH-neutral soap, and avoid automatic brush washes, especially in the first 7 days. If getting the car to us is the hard part, pickup and delivery are available.
8. What drives the price?
Ask what the number is made of, not just what it is. A PPF quote is built from the coverage (how many panels), the vehicle (its size, and how complex its bumpers, vents, and sensor areas are), the film line, and the prep the paint needs. Two quotes for “full front” can differ simply because they are not quoting the same panels, the same film, or the same prep. That is why question 5 matters: compare panel lists and film lines, not totals.
Our answer: PPF is quoted per vehicle, and the written quote is free. Tell us your car and what you want protected, and we will put an exact number in writing. Request a quote.
Bring the list
Wrap Labs was founded in 2014, and we would rather you ask all eight of these questions than none. Bring them to your consultation or ask us over the phone, and you will get a straight answer to each. See our paint protection film service, or contact us for a free quote. We reply the same day during business hours, usually within the hour.
